GK4: Public building

Studio GK4 is the second semester of 2nd year in Architecture. The main topic is “Public Building”. The previous semester developed three sites with a small housing program to ensure new access and activity through the corridors leading in to Veterinærhøgskolen at Adamstuen in Oslo. This semester the students worked in the core of the area, with the transformation of the former maintenance-building into a “Bydelshus”.

The underlying premise for our course is that Veterinærhøgskolen is perfectly fine -The density and morphology is similar to the city around. The buildings, spanning 150 years of different styles, are of good quality. The office buildings should be easy to transform to housing. The more specific buildings can become public.

This is the first time 2nd year students of Architecture embark on transformation of an existing building. We have treated the existing building, drawn by Rolf Ramm Østgaard in the 1960s, as a complex site. How much of this “site” that should be manipulated is up to the students.

The buildings at Veterinærhøgskolen has a huge cultural and environmental deposit. Opening up the area, without vaporizing the resources already contained, has been the common aim for the course at large.
